Celebrating 25 Years of Diplomatic Relations: South African-China Shenzhen Chamber of Commerce’s Milestone Event

On the 21st of August, the South African-China Shenzhen Chamber of Commerce hosted a grand celebration to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa. This prestigious event was attended by a distinguished gathering of diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and honored guests, including Terisa Hsu-Lee, a top 30 finalist in the Mrs. South Africa competition.

The event saw the presence of prominent figures such as Honorable Acting Consular Mr. Zhou Yujiang, representing the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Johannesburg, and South African Government Officials like Dr. Zwele Mkize. Additionally, Honorable Mr. Liu Xin, Chairman of the Shenzhen Overseas Exchange Association, graced the occasion alongside leaders from various overseas Chinese communities, business entrepreneurs, and other esteemed individuals.

Terisa Hsu-Lee, the sole South Africaneese Mrs. South Africa finalist, expressed her delight at being invited to this momentous event. She had the privilege of serving as a translator for overseas delegate Mr. Chen Zhen Wen during his keynote speech, delivered in front of a captivated audience of over 800 attendees. Mr. Chen Zhen Wen represented the China Shenzhen Chamber of Commerce and the Shenzhen investors and delegates who had traveled from China to attend the celebration. Terisa considered this role as a true honor, recognizing her role as an ambassador for South Africa-Asia relations and its significant contribution to the country’s economic growth.

In addition to celebrating the diplomatic relations between the two nations, the South African-China Shenzhen Chamber of Commerce also demonstrated its commitment to philanthropy. During the event, they donated a generous sum of R200,000 to Eketsang Secondary School. This contribution reflects their dedication to supporting education and community development in South Africa.

The gala event took place at the Times Square Arena and featured cultural performances by Shenzhen artists, as well as a heartwarming performance by the Eketsang Secondary School Choir. It served as a symbol of the successful trade, investment relations, and cultural exchange between China and South Africa. Furthermore, it underscored the chamber’s commitment to promoting BRICS cooperation between the two nations.

Terisa Hsu-Lee’s participation in this event not only showcased her role as a Mrs. South Africa finalist but also highlighted the importance of empowering married women in South Africa. The Mrs. South Africa pageant is a nine-month journey that empowers married women between the ages of 25-55 through workshops, training, and challenges. It provides them with a platform to grow and be recognized for their incredible contributions.

The journey begins in February each year, with 100 women selected as semi-finalists from various provinces. In July, the top 30 finalists are announced, leading up to the Big Crowning Day. Terisa is set to participate in the preliminary competition on November 16th, with the finals crowning event taking place on November 17th, both at the Theatre of Marcellus in Emperors Palace.

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa, Terisa Hsu-Lee’s participation in the event and her role as a Mrs. South Africa finalist serve as a testament to the importance of cultural exchange, cooperation, and the empowerment of women in fostering strong international relationships. This event not only commemorated the past but also paved the way for a brighter future in the bilateral relations between these two nations.
